ORNL Melton Valley Soils and Sediments Remediation
As a teaming subcontractor to BJC, RSI provided project management and
technical support for remediation of contaminated soils and sediment within the
Melton Valley Closure Project at ORNL. Scope of this project included the
following:
- Excavation/removal of surface impoundments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(3,000 cy) and Homogeneous Reactor Experiment Pond (5,400 cy) for disposal at
the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility;
- Excavation/removal of eight contaminated soil sites (15,800 cy) for disposal as
contour fill beneath Melton Valley caps; excavation/removal of hot spots
associated with the White Oak Creek floodplain;
- Stabilization of inactive waste lines (low level waste and process waste system)
through pipeline and vault/pit grouting (over 20,000 LF), pipeline removal (500
ft), pipeline capping; and
- Final verification surveys that include sampling at excavations, walkover
surveys and sampling of areas outside Melton Valley caps (~800 acres), and
calculation of post remediation risk levels.

As the Subcontract Technical Representative for this work, RSI provided daily
field oversight of subcontractors, prepared project progress reports, convened
weekly subcontractor schedule meetings, and provided interface with Project
Controls and Procurement on subcontract submittals, schedule, and costs
associated with direct work, change notices, and modifications to the contract.
