Facility Integrated Characterization

As a subcontractor to Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC (BJC), RSI is providing
characterization of concrete slabs, soils, and buried infrastructure of the
K-25, K-27, K-25 “U”, and Poplar Creek facilities, and the process gas tie lines
to ensure an integrated approach to characterization and decision-making. The
K-25 and K-27 buildings are huge inactive uranium enrichment facilities
containing thousands of pieces of process equipment on approximately 2 million
ft2 of floor space. Major areas of integration include development of sampling
and analysis plans and work packages, coordination of laboratory resources,
support of data management, and field characterization. Specific activities
include the following:
- Characterization of building structures, coolants, oils, ventilation,
and miscellaneous piping, valves, instruments, and electrical equipment in
accordance with the Waste Characterization Plan for the Disposal of the K-25
and K-27 Building Structures and Remaining Components.
- Characterization of the process gas equipment and piping in the K-27
building to adequately characterize waste streams by collecting data to
determine the representative contaminant averages for the waste streams that
will be generated and to support nuclear criticality determinations.
- Characterization of the K-25 “U”, Poplar Creek Area facilities, and
Process Gas Tie Line according to approved sampling plans.
